In Defense of Confidence

September 24, 2019 by kingstreetearlylearningcenter

I consider myself quite fortunate. My job as a preschool teacher is a lot of fun. I get to be surrounded by children – who are by nature cheerful. They delight in what are seemingly the smallest of accomplishments, like cutting paper on a line, even though it comes out looking raggedy and jagged and not remotely resembling a circle (or square or triangle, or whatever.)

But if I do my job in a way that I consider to be right, each child feels successful.

Every child at this age needs and deserves to feel successful. Everything is new to them. Everything is an opportunity to help them develop a self-image as curious and capable, smart and successful.

The adults around them give them tools to build success and confidence.

As one of the adults in their lives, I must give them the tools from which to build success, which leads to confidence. And confidence enables a child to embrace an unfamiliar task, to try a new skill, to make a new friend. Confidence can facilitate learning, whereas a lack of it can hinder a student’s ability to feel successful, or happy, or deserving. A lack of confidence can impede a student’s ability to learn in later years. I have seen the devastating effect it can have.

Our joyous and nurturing atmosphere.

My Personnel Policy states that teachers here at Miss Mia’s Early Birds Preschool are expected to maintain a joyous and nurturing atmosphere. Children deserve nothing less. Period. It is our duty to delight with them, to cheer them on, to model kindness. It is up to us to teach them that failure doesn’t mean you aren’t successful – it just means that another try is in order. Sometimes that additional attempt leads to countless tries, which requires patience on my part.

Patience for preschoolers.

If patience is hard for you, just take a moment and think about just how lucky you are to be part of a child’s formative years, to be someone who can have a positive effect on the life and self-image of a child. Just think about how profound an influence positive and nurturing encounters can have on a child, and therefore, our world.

We’re Ready for Your Child

June 4, 2019 by kingstreetearlylearningcenter

At KSELC, we delight in the growth we see in our students. We patiently remind our children to use their words when they face a “situation” with a classmate. And, we are eager to watch and listen to see how it will be handled. Often, the children have not yet claimed negotiating skills or mastered their own voice. But when they begin to do so, witnessing their interpretations of our teacher modeling is both rewarding and adorable.

How we measure learning at the preschool level.

Growth becomes apparent through very keen observation in a preschool program that focuses on social skills and play-based learning. We measure our students’ personal and academic growth through knowledgeable and informed observation and conversation.

Relevant evaluations are done by someone familiar with the child’s “baseline.”

In the mind of a casual observer, verbal objections from one child to another may translate to selfishness or rigidity. However, to the teacher who knows the children well, that verbal exchange may signal a milestone for the protestor, who is now articulating her frustrations rather than hitting or grabbing or stomping away.

We rejoice in each milestone.

When a child who typically needs step by step instructions, quietly cleans up her lunch spot and put her things away, without any prompting, we know we’ve seen a milestone. One we commend, and quietly rejoice. Likely an insignificant act to the eyes of a stranger; to us, it’s something to take a small bit of pride in. She may or may not do it again for a while, but we will continue to offer gentle reminders, and recognize the small actions or words with a conscious acknowledgment, and guide each child toward their next individual milestones.

PRESS RELEASE

April 15, 2019 by kingstreetearlylearningcenter

Local Church and Preschool Join Forces for Family Fun Fest Community Event

The King Street Early Learning Center, along with the King Street United Church of Christ, both located at 201 S. King Street, in Danbury, are planning their annual, multigenerational Family Fun Fest for the entire community on May 4, to be held on site.

The fest begins at 11:15 with a patriotic, interactive music program by Nancy Wildman.  The event will also feature story time with the Honorable Mayor Mark Boughton at noon. At 1:00, there will be an original presentation, Dancin’ With the Honeybees, by beekeeper,  Clifford Wright-Sunflower. This interactive, 90 minute play “brings the scientific magic of the honeybee hive to life.” The play is sure to delight, engage and educate people of all ages. Immediately following is the “Bee Touch Me Museum,” which invites children to further investigate  and reinforce the concepts learned in the show. Additionally, for a small fee, children may make a beeswax candle. Farm fresh honey, pollen and beeswax candles will be available for sale, as well.

During the event, preschool staff and consultants will available to answer questions about the King Street Early Learning Center.

Additional offerings include KSUCC’s very own Pastor Paul and his balloon animal creations, Ben’s Bells, face painting, and Touch-a-Fire Truck. Food will be available from food trucks during the event.

THIS IS A FREE EVENT, however, donations will be gratefully accepted.
